Gypsy Witch Deck Contains a Petit Lenormand

Above, Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Deck

For those who have the Gypsy Witch Fortune Telling Playing Cards sitting on a shelf collecting dust, it can be used as a Petit Lenormand.

Things to note:

  • You have to separate the 36 Lenormand cards from the full-sized 52-card deck. I've listed them below.
  • They are NOT printed with the proper number on them. The number won't be important for those who are beginning Lenormand. It becomes more a part of the process when you start working deeply with the Grand Tableau, though (a spread for advanced readers that includes all 36 cards). The images will work great, though.
  • Some of the text printed on the cards disagree with the system I've been taught. I choose to ignore them.
  • The card inserts don't match the traditional Lenormand. This is not a big deal for beginners. The inserts are rarely used anyhow, except the courts and for advanced readers (the "correct" courts are not shown on the Gypsy deck, an example of the inserts is pictured below).
  • All the images match except there is no Cross card in the Gypsy deck.  So instead, I used #37, the rapiers. They are two swords "crossed" and considered a negative card.

Above, Rapiers can substitue for Cross

Above, comparing the card inserts & numbers for "Crossroad."

The French Cartomancy (left)  and The Original Lenormand (center) contain the Queen of Diamonds insert, while the Gypsy Witch deck (right) contains the Ace of Clubs.

Below are the cards you will want to separate from the rest of the deck to use the Lenormand images.

  • On  the LEFT are the usual name and number of the typical Lenormand Cards.
  • On the RIGHT are the Gypsy Witch Cards' names and numbers to find in  your deck

Be aware that the cartomancy of the playing card inserts is also radically different to the values assigned to Petit Lenormand cards!

Thank you for explaining. I am totally new to the Lenormand decks and to reading playing cards. I always just read tarot or used no tools. However I have always felt I really was horrible at reading tarot and came across cartomancy and wanted to try. I was told to find a deck of playing cards I liked and they should be new or of some kind of special meaning. Well I had no money to buy a deck and found I had this deck the Gypsy witch deck which I never used becuase it sounded way to complicated. But now I am really drawn to its energy. and would like just use it as a regular deck of cards I was told I need 54 cards and which this deck has but you say the Lenormand has 36. Is that just the traditional system to Lenormand readings? Should I ignore this if I am just learning how to use Cartomancy? I guess I am just confused to what you have here and I need to reread and reread and study. If you ever do a youtube video on this deck would be great to see it in action. This deck does have a real blunt spirit to it. So I could I make my own reading system with it ? I mean as long as its accurate and helpful right? Thank you so very much. I love all your videos and blogs. Sorry I ask so much. I just want to understand.

Sincerely, Maria

Maria, There is a Petit and Grand Lenormand. I read the Petit, which is the 36 cards. The Grand is more like the number of cards in a traditional deck. But Lenormand cards are read differently than playing cards (or tarot cards/suits). It's just a matter of choosing which system you wish to work with and becoming fluent in that system. It would be confusing to be learning several of them at one time, as they may not overlap in meaning. I hope this answers your question okay..

Hello, Donnaleigh!
I love this deck.
The correct association with Ship card of the Petit Lenormand is made with card 16 of the Gypsy Witch and not with the card 3.
Thanks for sharing your valuable work with us.
Best wishes.

Good catch, Cris! I didn't catch that typo in the list! I will change that right away. I need a good editor like you!

I have been reading with the gypsy witch cards for years. The card #45 is the cross.
