Judging Steven Tyler: American Idol Prediction

Posted on January 16, 2012 at 10:15 AM

"Slap that baby on the ass and call me Christmas!"

(What Tyler exclaimed after hearing

Scotty McCreery's deep-voiced rendition of

Josh Turner's "Your Man.")

After a successful season of winning America's hearts as the funny but tenderhearted man who knows the balance between being egotisictic and humble, Steven Tyler is returning to American Idol this week for the 2012 season. Lemme hear a "YEE HAW!" out there!

He Won Our Hearts in 2011

Let's take a look at how the world will react to Tyler this season on American Idol.

Last year, many got to see the soft side of Steven, the man who didn't want to hurt contestants yet had to weed out the best, the only judge who got up close and personal with auditioner Chris Medina's fiancée, who was wheeled into the audition room. A beautiful girl who had suffered a life-threatening traumatic head injury after an accident just two months before her wedding, she now was unable to talk. Tyler was the only judge who got right up to her, and whispered to her,

"That's why he sings so good, because  he sings to you,"

as seen in the first 30 seconds of this video:

Will He Bring it Back? Or Bust?

So will Tyler do it again? Will America maintain their mad love affair with the legendary rocker, or will they become bored? Let's take a look at what the cards say. For this reading I used a card from each of two decks created by Ciro Marchetti.

And the cards Tyler received are:

The King of Cups (left) from the Legacy of the Divine Tarot

and "Perspective/Point of View" (right) from The Oracle of Visions.

Ah, but the King of Cups is the warm-hearted man, the one who tells soft jokes and judges from the heart. This man loves what he does and loves to be around people. He expresses from the heart, and does it softly, and his kingdom loves him for it. He has the world in his hand, this King, as we fall in love with him for all his kindness and compassion.

"I've been there before, and I know what it feels like," is the the beginning of the poem that accompanies the card on the right in Ciro's companion book to the deck. This card shows a young woman and her older counterpart, both peering through an eye of the same mask. Tyler has walked the walk. He's walked on the road to fame one pebble at a time, and he knows how hard the climb is. He sees through  the eyes of experience, but also as an elder who now looks to the upcoming generation as holding the future.  He looks through the eyes of "what will last?" He's not looking for a passing fad; instead, he's looking for talent with permanency.

Despite his sweet approach, he does look with a discerning eye of experience. This second card shows him seeing things from the bigger perspctive and so he will dole out his comments kindly, but with words that allow people to continue to create their future. Tyler sees his destiny and their destinies combined. they both hold the same mask of gold.

With two wide-spread generations holding this mask, I also see this as Tyler appealing to more than just one age category. The world, from youth to aged, will watch what he does and find appeal in his approach.

Holding the same mask shows him getting right into the thick of people, too, holding onto what they hold. As we saw in the video above, and in the memory below, Tyler is meant to be in the midst of people and holds his own in participating in the joyful journey of life. It's like a party for him, and he recognizes the joy, hope, and potential of the youth who surround him here.  He becomes one with them quite comfortably, and we'll continue to see this merging of energies in 2012.

CROWD WINNER

The King of Cups holds humor in his heart.

Not one to have sharp or biting humor  like  the King of Swords might hold, this King  of Cups speaks with a velvet tongue. He may be flirty, but he won't go anywhere with his flirts; they are intended to make the recipient feel good about themselves. He may even be self-depreciating, knowing that we all share the common concerns as we aspire toward our dreams.

The Oracle of Visions card on the right does suggest that this season Tyler may have a more discerning eye, weeding out more of the contestants earlier in the game than he did in the 2011 season. So he may be more particular regarding who he lets through.

Will Someone Resurrect?

One last thing, with the Oracle of Visions, there is a young woman here who has matured on the right. There may be a returning contestant who was denied the Golden Ticket in a previous audition, who may have been asked to hone their talents. This person looks like they did improve, with more maturity in the return, and this person may be seen with more favorable eyes this year. It may be a woman contestant, since this card demonstrates feminine energy, but  it could just as well be a male who has either physical features like this card or simply has receptive or even feminine qualities. We'll see. But someone may make it through who did not in a previous audition.

In the meantime, I think we can expect more smiles and heartfelt moments with this famous King of Cups, and we look forward to his loving interactions with the people who stand before this judge's eyes and heart.

"You could call me 'late for dinner' and I'd still love you,"

Tyler told Jennifer Lopezafter she called him "Steve" and he asked to be called "Steven."

"But not lunch."

So yes, Tyler remains the King of Hearts, the king of OUR hearts, and this season he continues to rein in an audience of admirers who appreciate his heart of gold.

Here's a little American Idol trivia to kick off your new season with them... ;)

THIS ... IS 'AMERICAN IDOL' ... WINNING SONG SALES

Dear Gary,

It's been almost 10 years since Kelly Clarkson won the first season of "American Idol" and her debut single, "A Moment Like This," was released.

Since then, each year's champion has released a debut song that he or she performed on the season finale episode after being crowned the winner. My question is, which winning "Idol" singles have sold the most?

Thank you,

Jeremy Mesich

Hi Jeremy,

With the 11th season of "Idol" starting Wednesday (Jan. 18), let's recap the sales (digital and physical combined, where applicable) of each coronation song dating to Clarkson's "Moment," according to Nielsen SoundScan:

549,000, "A Moment Like This," Kelly Clarkson, 2002
788,000, "Flying Without Wings," Ruben Studdard, 2003
555,000, "I Believe," Fantasia, 2004
870,000, "Inside Your Heaven," Carrie Underwood, 2005
701,000, "Do I Make You Proud," Taylor Hicks, 2006

329,000, "This Is My Now," Jordin Sparks, 2007
1,435,000, "The Time of My Life," David Cook, 2008
340,000, "No Boundaries," Kris Allen, 2009
182,000, "Beautiful Day," Lee DeWyze, 2010
755,000, "I Love You This Big," Scotty McCreery, 2011

Last year's victor Scotty McCreery lays claim to the fourth-biggest winning "Idol" single and the top seller since David Cook's "The Time of My Life." No surprise that radio play made a difference, as, unlike Kris Allen and Lee DeWyze's initial singles, McCreery's "I Love You This Big" found widespread radio support, reaching No. 15 on Country Songs.

(Allen did better with his first album single, "Live Like We're Dying," which climbed to No. 10 on the airplay-based Pop Songs chart and has sold 1.7 million downloads).

HiC,

Those are incredible statistics!! I'm thrilled to hear Scottie made it to #15, and David Cook...wow...he outdid them all! That surprised me (but I do love his voice so I should not be surprised).

This was incredible, thank you!
